Rarely does a chimney slice through the house in two different areas. However, this was the case with this one and a half story roof located in the lovely Braeburn area of Houston, Texas. The homeowners were referred by a previous customer of Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing.
After helping the homeowner secure an insurance claim, we put on a new GAF Timberline HD roof. The chimney on this home was so tall it needed to be re-flashed on both the one-story section and the two-story section, a fairly uncommon situation.
The Braeburn area of Houston, Texas is known for its beautiful tree-lined streets and great location. Braeburn is right between Beltway 8 and Loop 610. Nearby is Braeburn Country Club and George Bush Park. Back in the 1980s the 41st President of the United States lived near Braeburn.
Of course, most homes have just one chimney penetrating the roof – or no chimney at all. This Houston home was a bit unique. Also, at least one of the two chimney areas had been leaking for a while from the existing rusted metal flashing. Each chimney area on this home, both one-story and two-story, received the same skilled craftsmanship and attention from our expert installers here at Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing.
First, the dimensions of the existing flashing were measured and duplicated. The crew then completely removed the old chimney flashing, checked for rotted wood, and then installed new custom galvanized steel base flashing and counter flashing. Oftentimes a groove, or “score,” is cut directly into the brick to receive the new metal. A water shield underlay adhesive and a coat of matching paint finished the job.
Not every chimney on every home that’s re-roofed needs such a complex do-over, but if that’s the case, it’s no problem at Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing. We’ve done it hundreds, if not thousands of times, over the past thirty years. Our satisfied customer in Braeburn was kind enough to give us a great review – a happy ending to another re-roof story in the Greater Houston Area!
