Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing Case Studies: A complete new deck and roof for a repeat customer in Galveston, Texas

Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 by Ernie Smith

The first time we did Dr. R’s roof was back in 2003, not long before Hurricane Ike hit Galveston in 2008. The deadly category four storm was the third-costliest of any Atlantic Hurricane. Ike’s storm surge caused flooding in much of Galveston, including significant damage to the renowned University of Texas Medical Branch.

Hurricane Ike leveled the small community of Gilchrist northeast of Galveston. Almost a thousand homes were destroyed. The search-and-rescue operation after Ike is the largest search-and-rescue operation in Texas history.

Dr. R’s older ranch style home near the water fared well during the big storm. So when it was time for a new roof, Dr. R enlisted our help once again. The second go-round on this well-built Galveston home was a bit more complex.

The original solid wood tongue and groove decking had cracks and splits in multiple places. A better nailing surface was in order and the decision was made to completely remove the original decking and replace it with plywood.

Galveston, Texas is a barrier island with a stormy history so city building codes are tough. A city permit is the first order of business. Secondly, a structural engineer is hired to perform periodic drive-by inspections, ensuring all work meets the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association guidelines.

Our crews completely stripped the existing tongue and groove decking (also called shiplap), exposing the rafters and the inside of the home to the elements. Finishing one section of the roof at a time is the wisest approach.

Next we installed 5/8” plywood per Galveston city code, complete w/ metal hurricane clips and extra thick decking nails as required by TWIA for all coastal counties.

An Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration laminate Shasta White shingle completed this Galveston, Texas roof job – plus the obligatory final engineer inspection and sign-off. Shasta White is a great choice for Galveston, with a “green energy” touch that reflects the bright Galveston sunlight and helps keep the house cool.
