These shingles are missing some granules, and will soon decay.
Shingle granules actually perform no physical function for the shingle, but they're not just there for aesthetics, either! They're only there to protect the shingle mat from the direct UV rays! Without the granules, the shingle mat will become brittle and will crack, causing leaks in the roof system.
Nope! It's the little upside down nails, nailed from the bottom of the drip edge upward, penetrating the shingles from underneath. We're not saying Uncle Bob doesn't know how to roof, but if he did this, you might not want him touching your roof again any time soon!
The shingles originally installed on this roof didn't hold up well. That's why materials matter so much. Get the best brands, and you won't have this problem in the future.
We're not sure who didn't get the memo, but this underlay should be UNDER the shingles, not hanging out. Workmanship isn't very high, these days. It's imperative that you have a veteran team of experienced workers on your roof!
